History of FM Radio In Ghana? 

Just like the British Broadcasting Corporation, the government of Ghana also has and authorizes audio broadcasts under the auspices of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). 

The GBC came to existence by law in 1968. The establishment of the broadcasting corporation was mandated as a State Broadcaster, a public service broadcaster, and a Commercial Broadcaster only in Ghana.

Radio ZOY was the first broadcasting outlet in Ghana that was operated by the British (Ghana’s colonial masters). It was established in Ghana in 1935. 

The broadcasting relay, which was operated by the BBC after Ghana’s independence in 1957, changed to become the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

With the dispensation of time, and the review of laws and governance, the government of Ghana established the National Communications Authority, mandated to license and regulate electronic communications activities and services in Ghana. 

The NCA, with it’s mandatory status, has issued licenses to a number of radio and TV stations. Apart from the state-owned GBC, there are also, private-owned, Campus, commercial, and Community radio stations.

Public Radio Stations

A public Radio Station is classified as all stations owned and operated by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and/or any other stations established by the Government of Ghana by statutory enactment. This type of radio station has a maximum coverage specification of 45km.

Public Foreign Radio

Public Foreign Radio stations are those that are established by foreign governments through diplomatic arrangements to rebroadcast or relay content from foreign countries. This type of radio station has a maximum coverage specification of 45km.

Commercial Radio

Commercial Radio Stations are classified as being owned by private entities and operated for profit. It is also controlled by independent commercial companies or individuals with a maximum coverage specification of 45km. 

Community Radio 

Unlike commercial radio stations, Community Radio stations are a non-profit broadcasting service. This broadcasting service covers only a marginalized community whose ownership and management are representative of the community for which the service is provided.

Community radio stations have a maximum coverage of 5 kilometers. Authorities may extend it’s coverage, but not beyond 25km.

Stations that are operated within the ambit of educational institutions are known as campus radios under the regulations of the NCA. These radios have a maximum coverage of 5km. Authorities may extend it’s coverage, but not beyond 25km.
