The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the brutal assault on three journalists by illegal miners (galamsey operators) in the Breman-Adomanya forest on February 21, 2025.
The journalists, who were covering the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, suffered serious physical injuries and had their equipment destroyed in the attack.
Mr. Dwumfour described the incident as “barbaric” and is demanding swift justice for the victims. He also expressed deep concern over the continued disregard for journalists’ safety, despite their key role in exposing illegal mining activities.
“It is unfortunate that in spite of the crucial role media practitioners play in the fight against galamsey, our welfare is not prioritized,” he said.
He further noted that the media has been left out of government interventions against illegal mining, making journalists more vulnerable in the field.
The GJA will be engaging both the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Ghana Police Service to push for stronger protection measures for journalists working in high-risk areas.
